The most common kind of job

A single, small, functional part that can’t be bought on its own: a valve connector, a socket cover, a pegboard stand, a shelf connector, a mug lid, a fan holder for a PC.

The most memorable

A full-size Formula 1 front wing. A wearable Turian helmet. A V8 engine-block cooler. A 737 instrument panel for a home flight simulator. Multi-level taverns for D&D. A stadium for retired golf balls.

What 3D printing isn’t good for

Parts that carry serious loads or keep people safe — brakes, steering, climbing gear — belong in metal. Very large flat panels are often cheaper cut from sheet material. And mass production in the thousands is usually a job for injection moulding.

What helps

  • A photo next to a ruler or tape measure
  • The key measurements, if you have calipers
  • Where it lives — indoors, outside, in a car
  • How many, and by when
